FIJI ISLAND TRAVEL INFORMATION

FAQ for Fiji Travellers

We've put together some useful information for your travels into the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands with Awesome Adventures Fiji.

FIJI ACCOMMODATION - YASAWA AND MAMANUCA ISLANDS

Accommodation standards differ greatly in Fiji’s Yasawa Islands. This is good news, because it means there is something for all types of travellers. To identify the different standards, we have a 1, 2 and 3 coconut grading system. NOTE: properties have a minimum 2 night stay policy.

Find out more about our Fiji accommodation grading system >>

AWESOME PACKAGES - WHERE YOU STAY / RIGHT TO SUBSTITUTE PROPERTIES

Most the resorts in the Yasawa and Mamanuca Islands are quite small and capacity is limited. Where we specify particular resorts, chances are, you will stay at that resort. BUT... on occasions they may be full for the dates that you want to stay there. Reservation systems in the Yasawas also aren’t always that flash and we rely on phone calls..... so when you book any multi-island stay package in the 1 and 2 coconut categories, we reserve the right to put you in another property.

The new resort will be of a similar standard to the original and you’ll have just as good a time. Occasionally we may even have to swap the order of the nights round or put you on a different island but in all cases we’ll provide you with a similar experience.

BOOKING EXTRA NIGHTS

On your package itinerary you can add as many extra nights to any of the properties included as you like. Turn a 6 night package into a 10!

TRAVELLING WITH CHILDREN?

No problem, children rates are available - as long as they're travelling with an adult of course! To book children with Awesome Adventures Fiji please email info@awesomefiji.com.

WHAT IS A FULL MONTY PACKAGE?

The best Yasawa Island activities on offer that most people choose to do while in the islands. Full Monty is available with our 1 and 2 coconut Fiji Packages. It is the same as the standard package, but includes the activities. Booking them in advance like this means you won’t have to miss out!

i don't know what to do: a Fiji package or a bula pass?

BULA PASSES - If you are the freewheeling type of traveller, willing to be flexible and take a few chances then the Bula Pass or Bula Combo Pass are for you. There are no guarantees you’ll get to stay where you wish every night, but you will have maximum flexibility to travel where and when you want.

PACKAGES – Choose one of our great packages combining the transfers, accommodation, meals and key activities and you will save a great deal of time and hassle. With the packages, everything is sorted and you’ll have a good idea of your holiday cost as most of it is already paid for!

OPEN-DATED BOOKINGS

Yes, these are available. Please contact us to find out more.

SUNDAYS

Sunday is a day of rest and church-going in the Yasawas. This means that the usual activities are not on offer on Sundays. In most villages you will be welcome to join the church service - an amazing experience. When travelling on a Full Monty package your activities will be organised around this.

MONEY MATTERS

THERE ARE NO BANKS ON THE ISLANDS. The bank at Nadi Airport is open 24 hours. Cash machines are available at Nadi Airport, in Nadi and there are two at Denarau Marina.

The currency is the Fijian dollar.

Credit cards and travellers cheques can be now be used on most islands but it is still advisable to have some cash with you. If you’re on an Awesome Adventures Fiji package between FJ$35-$45 cash per day should be enough. For those you using the ‘Bula Pass’ and paying as you go, accommodation prices in the 1 and 2 Coconut properties are between FJ$100 -$120 per night for a dorm (including 3 meals) and FJ$120 -$200+ per person per night for a share twin/double bure (including 3 meals).

DAILY DEPARTURES TO THE MAMANUCA AND YASAWA ISLANDS

For all packages, passes and transfers, Awesome Adventures Fiji offer daily departures. Our vessel the ‘Yasawa Flyer’ is a high speed, modern catamaran, departing Denarau Marina at 8:30am daily for all Yasawa destinations. It returns daily at 5:45pm. The Mamanuca Islands of South Sea Island, Bounty and Beachcomber are also serviced on this run. Additional departures to these and other Mamanuca properties are also available throughout the day on board South Sea Cruises’ vessels. If you require any further assistance in booking your transfers or Bula Pass please email us (info@awesomefiji.com) as we'll be more than happy to assist you.

FREE NADI/DENARAU COACH TO MARINA ON DEPARTURE DAY

We are very happy to pick you up from your accommodation on the day of departure for the transfer to Denarau Marina. If you don’t book your Nadi accommodation through us you have to advise us where you are staying. If you don’t advise us, getting to the marina on time is your responsibility and at your cost.

CHECK IN AT DENARAU MARINA

If you’d like to speed things up and avoid the queues at the morning departure, then you are most welcome to check in at our Denarau Marina counter the day prior any time after 9.30am. You will be given all your necessary documents so that you can board the Yasawa Flyer directly the next day.

SPARE A THOUGHT FOR THE ENVIRONMENT

Please treat Fiji’s environment with respect. You will see for yourself that Fiji’s natural environment is something special and we need to ensure that it is looked after for future generations.

Below the sea lives delicate eco-systems of corals and reef fish and above the sea are pristine beaches and forests. Let’s keep it that way!

HOW CAN YOU BE A GREEN TRAVELLER?

  • Take only photos, leave only footprints. Yes, the shells are lovely, but they could also be a future home for little sea creatures. Some flowers and plants are protected and really, everything should stay in it’s natural environment. The only thing you should take away with you is your rubbish. Never leave it on the beach!
    • Don’t rush to flush and take short showers: fresh water is precious everywhere, especially on the islands.
    • Never touch coral and when snorkelling or diving please take all precautions to NEVER STAND ON CORAL, regardless of if you are wearing flippers or not. Doing this will break, damage and even kill the coral.
    • Try not to disturb marine life and never touch them – they have never been exposed to human bacteria and could get sick.
    • With many of our packages we offer swimming with manta rays. Don’t be tempted to touch them. While these gentle giants are not going to harm you, you can damage their delicate mucus membrane by touching them, which can lead to them getting infections.

I WANT TO GIVE SOMETHING BACK TO THE YASAWA VILLAGERS

If you are interested in volunteering in Fiji or donating towards the Yasawa Island Villages, please visit our Yasawa Trust Foundation section of the site.

EATING

One of life’s necessities and great pleasures. We’ve included meals in the packages (except where stated) because eating at the resort you’re staying in is the only choice – there are no restaurants around the corner. Meals are served at specific times of the day. This provides an opportunity to check out the talent - sorry, we mean meet fellow travellers. Meals are simple and filling. We recommend vegetarians inform the resort on arrival.

GOT A PROBLEM OR NEED HELP?

As mentioned the properties you are staying in are not owned by us however we do monitor standards and we do care if things are not right. If something is not right with regards to the accommodation please speak to the receptionist or Manager firstly. If the problem is not resolved to your satisfaction then please call us. If there is a problem with your itinerary or travel arrangements then please see the girls at the Travel Desk on Yasawa Flyer or call us. The Awesome phone number is (Fiji) +679 675 0499 and is staffed from 7am to 8pm every day.

TRAVEL INSURANCE

We do highly recommend that you purchase travel insurance before you leave home. There are no medical facilities in the Yasawas so if any medical problem arises you will need to return to Nadi. Sea and weather conditions can sometimes prevent travel on the booked dates as well. It is therefore and essential condition of travelling with Awesome Adventures Fiji that you have a valid travel insurance policy.
